Why Should I See an ENT for Allergies?

If you're struggling more often than not with symptoms of allergies, such as congestion, snoring, or a chronically runny nose, it's a good idea to see a doctor who has specific training in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies. Talking to Dr. Volpi, for example, can achieve the following:

  • Confirm that your symptoms are, in fact, caused by allergies and not another condition.
  • Identify your triggers through specific allergy testing.
  • Create a treatment plan that includes trigger avoidance as well as medication, if necessary.
  • Ensure that you have the right medicine or treatment program, such as prescription nasal spray or allergy shots.

What are the Symptoms of Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are soft, noncancerous growths that protrude off of the lining of the sinuses or nasal passages. Your doctor may evaluate you for nasal polyps if you present with chronic sinusitis, persistent swelling and irritation that may affect breathing. Additional signs of nasal polyps include:

  • Persistent stuffiness
  • Persistent runny nose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Frequent facial pain or headaches
  • Diminished or absent sense of smell or taste
  • Pain in the upper teeth
  • Snoring
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Pain or pressure on the forehead

Nasal polyps can be a frustrating problem. They can be removed via an office procedure that requires only a local anesthetic and endoscopic instruments.

What is Balloon Sinuplasty and Why is it Done?

Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive office procedure that opens constricted sinuses using a tiny balloon. The treatment is performed with a local anesthetic and a small catheter. This narrow tube, with a balloon on the end, is inserted through the nostril to the opening of the sinuses. There, the balloon is slowly inflated to compress the soft lining of the sinus, widening the opening. Balloon sinuplasty is most often performed to reduce the symptoms of chronic sinusitis; inflammation of the lining of the paranasal sinuses. It may also be performed to help relieve obstructive sleep apnea symptoms in certain patients.

Are the Results of Balloon Sinuplasty Permanent?

Chronic sinusitis can be a complex condition that involves numerous factors. For this reason, it is difficult to guarantee permanent results after the balloon sinuplasty procedure. That said, the vast majority of patients who undergo this treatment do not require additional care. One multicenter study of over 1,000 patients showed balloon sinuplasty to be about 95 percent effective.

Why Might I Need Sinus Surgery?

If you frequently experience any of the following, you can benefit from a comprehensive consultation and ENT evaluation:

  • Stuffy nose
  • Chronic or recurrent sinusitis
  • Facial pressure or pain
  • Nasal discharge
  • Congestion
  • Headache
  • Blurred or fuzzy vision

Sinus surgeries are performed endoscopically. This means that the doctor does not make large incisions to access the surgical site. Instead, procedures are performed using endoscopic instruments like a thin, flexible tube with a camera attached to the tip. In addition to the main endoscope that provides a view of the nasal passages or sinus cavity, the doctor uses other endoscopes with tiny instruments attached. These may expand the nasal passages or carefully remove tissue to clear obstructions.
