Habits That Ruin Sleep

A good night’s sleep is essential to be alert and focused each morning. But sometimes, high-quality sleep can be elusive. Believe it or not, you may have a daily habit that might be the reason behind your sleepless nights. Here are several things that can ruin your sleep and how you can take steps to correct the issue.

Eating Large Meals Before Bed

Sometimes we have to satisfy our appetites before turning in for the night. But eating heavy meals before going to sleep can cause you problems. Eating a big meal before bedtime can invite uncomfortable symptoms like heartburn, disrupting your rest.

Working Out Before Bed

Although working out is a great way to relieve stress from the day, exercising before bed can cause sleep interruptions. Working out stimulates your heart rate, muscle fibers, and breathing.

Exercising before bed makes it harder to wind yourself down and can cause your sleep patterns to suffer.

Drinking Coffee

Although a good cup of coffee can help you start your day, ingesting caffeinated products isn’t a good idea before bed. Coffee can keep you awake for hours, making for a rough night if you have a cup close to bedtime. While your favorite latté might help you enjoy your favorite book or TV show, it’s best to save it for your morning routine.

Also, try to avoid other caffeinated products to help keep your sleep intact, such as

  • Sodas
  • Energy Drinks
  • Tea
  • and chocolate

Drinking Alcohol Before Bed

Many rely on alcohol to help them relax before turning in for the night. Although alcohol can make you sleepy, it can disrupt your sleep. As your body digests the alcohol, it can cause interruptions in your sleep, such as snoring and worsen the effects of sleep apnea.
