Pediatric Sinus Surgery

What is pediatric sinus surgery?

Sinus infections in children can occur as the result of a prolonged cold or other sinus condition that causes sinus inflammation and infection in the sinus cavities. In most cases, children respond to antibiotics or other prescription medications that get rid of the sinus infection. Sinusitis that does not go away (chronic sinusitis) is sometimes treated with sinus surgery. Symptoms that may warrant sinus surgery will vary from patient to patient, but generally include one or more the following:

  • Pressure or pain in sinuses (under eyes)
  • Discharge from nose
  • Headache
  • Congestion / stuffy nose
  • Blurred or fuzzy vision

Why is pediatric sinus surgery performed?

In a small percentage of cases, children have persistent sinusitis that will not go away, sometimes causing a complete nasal obstruction. This can lead to other health complications, such as trouble breathing and spreading of the infection.

What does pediatric sinus surgery involve?

Sinus surgery involves a New York ENT doctor opening the natural drainage pathways in the sinuses with a medical instrument called an endoscope. This allows fluid to pass through the sinuses and out the nose. This opening of the sinuses usually clears up the current sinusitis ailment and prevents future infections from occurring as frequently.

What are the benefits of undergoing pediatric sinus surgery?

Benefits of pediatric sinus surgery include:

  • Relief from chronic sinusitis
  • Prevent future sinus infections
  • Improve nasal airway breathing ability
